Taylor Swift’s Newly Released 2008 Song “Mr. Perfectly Fine” May Address Her Former Relationship With Joe Jonas

Jonas’ now-wife Sophie Turner offered a hilarious reaction.

Taylor Swift continues to release “from the vault” tracks ahead of the deluxe, re-record reissue of her 2008 album, Fearless, and today she dropped the project’s latest song, “Mr. Perfectly Fine.” The track revisits a high-profile relationship of hers from over a decade ago, with lyrics that appear to address her former flame Joe Jonas. The DNCE and Jonas Brothers singer’s name began trending on Twitter shortly after the song’s release.

Swift’s original Fearless track, “Forever and Always,” famously addresses their relationship, as does her Speak Now song “Last Kiss.” Fans have also connected “Mr. Perfectly Fine” to Jonas, pointing to the song’s chorus:

But that was when I got to know Mr. “Change of heart”
Mr. “Leaves me all alone,” I fall apart
It takes everything in me just to get up each day
But it’s wonderful to see that you’re okay

Many have connected this to a Joe Jonas quote from 2008, which came in response to Swift calling him out on The Ellen DeGeneres Show for breaking up with her “over the phone in 27 seconds.” In a post on his MySpace page shared shortly after Swift’s interview, Jonas wrote:

For those who have expressed concern over the ’27 second’ phone call, I called to discuss feelings with the other person. Those feelings were obviously not well received. I did not end the conversation. Someone else did. Phone calls can only last as long as the person on the other end of the line is willing to talk. Anytime you are in a relationship for any length of time there are going to be issues. Sometimes they resolve, other times they lead to a change of heart; this was the case recently.

There are also some small lyrical parallels to “Forever and Always” and “Last Kiss” in the song, and its writing and recording process would line up with their 2008 romance.

A dozen years and multiple relationships later, both artists have a much better relationship. Jonas’ wife, actress Sophie Turner, even reacted to the song on Instagram, writing, “It’s not NOT a bop.”

“Mr. Perfectly Fine” is one of six previously unreleased songs from the Fearless era that will appear on Swift’s re-recorded version of the album, which is set to drop this Friday, April 9. She previously shared “You All Over Me” as well as her re-recorded version of “Love Story.”
